Empowering Communities, Restoring Ecosystems
The Centre for Self Empowerment (CSE) is a pioneering, community-driven development organization based in Vihiga County, Kenya, dedicated to transforming vulnerable communities through sustainable livelihoods, ecological restoration, and inclusive enterprise development.
Since our establishment in 2017, CSE has evolved into one of Western Kenya’s most respected grassroots organizations—combining scientific innovation, traditional knowledge, and participatory governance to drive measurable impact. Our programs address the structural barriers that keep rural populations trapped in poverty: nutritional insecurity, land degradation, and economic exclusion.
CSE was born from a grassroots awakening in 2017, when a coalition of community leaders, educators, and smallholder farmers recognized that poverty, malnutrition, and environmental collapse were symptoms of disempowerment—not inevitable realities.
From our earliest days, we adopted a participatory, self-empowerment model that treats communities not as beneficiaries but as co-creators of their own development. This approach combines capacity building, cooperative enterprise development, and regenerative land management into one cohesive framework.
Today, CSE operates across all five sub-counties of Vihiga, anchoring projects in gender-responsive design, climate resilience, and economic self-sufficiency. Our work is guided by a clear conviction: true development begins with empowerment—giving people the skills, tools, and ownership to shape their own future.
Our Vision: A self-reliant, ecologically restored, and economically inclusive society where every individual thrives with dignity and purpose.
Our Mission: To empower marginalized and vulnerable communities through sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and inclusive enterprise development that strengthen livelihoods, restore ecosystems, and build resilience.
Our Motto: “Fostering Self-Reliance, Restoring Our Future”
Integrity: Transparency and accountability guide every decision we make.
Equity: We champion gender equality, disability inclusion, and youth leadership in all our programs.
Innovation: We embrace creativity and evidence-based problem-solving to address complex challenges.
Sustainability: We prioritize long-term, regenerative solutions over short-term fixes.
Collaboration: We work through partnerships to amplify collective impact and create lasting change.
Our programs are built on three interconnected pillars that work together to create transformative change:
Restoring the Land: Through bamboo cultivation, Napier grass systems, and organic fertilizer production, we rehabilitate degraded ecosystems and enhance biodiversity.
Reviving Livelihoods: Through agro-enterprises and circular bio-economies, we create sustainable income streams and green jobs that lift families out of poverty.
Rebuilding Dignity: Through inclusion strategies, skills development, and community ownership, we restore hope and empower people to lead their own development.
CSE’s interventions operate at the intersection of agriculture, environment, and social inclusion, creating circular bio-economies that simultaneously tackle malnutrition, unemployment, and ecosystem decline.
We promote climate-smart, nutrition-sensitive agriculture through value-chain development in poultry, bamboo, and fruit crops. Our farmer training programs focus on regenerative agriculture, while revolving funds provide smallholder producers with the capital they need to grow.
We address soil degradation and biodiversity loss through large-scale ecological rehabilitation. Our bamboo-based watershed restoration projects and catchment rehabilitation initiatives convert waste into valuable resources through circular bio-economy models.
We empower the most vulnerable through targeted inclusion strategies, including a dedicated Gender & Inclusion Officer, on-site childcare facilities, and robust safeguarding systems that comply with PSEA standards.
We invest in young people as innovators and green job creators through vocational training in bamboo processing and agripreneurship, complemented by start-up incubation through revolving funds.
We create awareness and provide education on health and sanitation, including disease prevention, planned parenthood, and construction of clean water sources and sanitation facilities.
Since 2017, CSE has touched thousands of lives and restored hundreds of hectares of degraded land. Our approach delivers measurable results:
Beyond these numbers, our impact extends to improved nutrition, restored dignity, and stronger local leadership. For every shilling invested in our programs, we generate an estimated KES 3-5 in social value—demonstrating the power of community-led development.
Our work strategically aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDGs 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), 5 (Gender Equality), 8 (Decent Work), 12 (Responsible Consumption), 13 (Climate Action), and 15 (Life on Land).
We are also a frontline implementer of Kenya’s national development agendas, including Kenya Vision 2030, the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), and the Climate Change Act (2016). Our work ensures that local impact contributes to global progress.
CSE operates under a robust governance framework that ensures accountability and strategic direction. Our structure includes the General Meeting as our supreme governing body, an elected Board of Directors comprising a Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer, and professional management led by our Chief Executive.
We maintain rigorous financial accountability through double-entry accounting, quarterly financial reporting, annual external audits, dual signatory authorization, and strict adherence to environmental and social safeguards. Community-led committees guide our procurement processes, ensuring transparency and local ownership.
Unlike traditional development projects that create dependency, CSE’s model is designed for autonomy and replication beyond donor funding. We achieve sustainability through:
By embedding self-sufficiency and ecological regeneration into every program, we aim to transform rural livelihoods from dependency to lasting prosperity. Our scaling vision includes:
Whether you’re a potential partner, donor, or community member, we welcome you to join us in this transformative journey. Together, we can build a future where every community has the power to shape its own destiny—where ecological restoration and economic empowerment go hand in hand.
